Speakers: Zoe Romano, Martin De Bie and KOBAKANT

Artists and Designers use storytelling as a tool to raise questions, attentions, and curiosity to discuss current issues. In this Shoptalk, we invite Zoe Romano who created a fictional fashion designer to be shown at the Milano fashion week, Martin De Bie who takes old technology and turn it into contemporary object and KOBAKANT who started a “fake” e-textile tailor shop in the middle of Berlin. They will present their practices of storytelling and discuss how that can impact other’s ways of seeing the world.

This shoptalk is a pre-event of the Woolpunk Congress which will take place at KOBA on September 22/23. You are also invited to join this two days of co-storymaking weekend.

About the speakers

Zoe Romano
Zoe Romano is a craftivist, digital strategist e lecturer focused on social innovation, women in tech, digital fabrication, open design. She graduated in Philosophy, worked for several years in digital communication agencies and, at the same time, developed her social skills as media hacktivist on precarity, material and immaterial labor in the creative industries. She worked for Arduino as digital strategist from 2013 to 2017 and then co-founded WeMake Makerspace in 2014 where she now works full-time.

Martin De Bie
Designer, Martin is graduated in 2008 from the school of Art and Design of Saint-Étienne. Following this, he integrated the research department of the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (Paris) in 2009. During this period, he started to collaborate with the french branch of the Graffiti Research Lab and began to develop an experimental approach to design, combining interaction technologies with avant-garde urban socio-cultural practices. He also co-founded an hackerspace specialised in e-Textile, DataPaulette. Today, Martin share his time between teaching physical computing and interaction design, at ENSAD and other schools, personal research on hybrid materials (intertwining traditional techniques with high-tech processes) and collaborations. Live and work in Paris.

KOBAKANT
Mika Satomi and Hannah Perner-Wilson have been collaborating since 2006, and in 2008 formed the collective KOBAKANT. Together, through their work, they explore the use of textile crafts and electronics as a medium for commenting on technological aspects of today’s “high-tech” society. KOBAKANT believes in the spirit of humoring technology, often presenting their work as a twisted criticism of the stereotypes surrounding textile craftsmanship and electrical engineering. KOBAKANT believes that technology exists to be hacked, handmade and modified by everyone to better fit our personal needs and desires.
In 2009, as research fellows at the Distance Lab in Scotland, KOBAKANT published an online database for sharing their DIY wearable technology approach titled HOW TO GET WHAT YOU WANT.
